Seth Thomas Helmsman Ships Clock (E537-001) & Barometer Nickel Plated Cases w/ Ships Wheel Look 1965
Item Description
Nice Seth Thomas Ships Bell and Barometer Set for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep for yourself!
Great Vintage Ships Bell Clock and Barometer set here from Seth Thomas Company before they were taken over by General Time Corp. and the manufacturing quality of units declined.
The cases are made of metal and still have a nice shiny nickel plated finish to them. Some minor finish loss. All the ship's wheel spindles are in place on both pieces.
Screw off glass bezels on both pieces. The glass is intact on both, no cracking or blistering. Not quite sure of the year made, sometime before General Time took over in 1968. Would guess the set was manufactured in June 1965 with the incised notation of "6506" on the back plate of the movement.
The barometer unit was made per Taylor Instrument Company per what noted on the bottom of the barometer face. The pressure needle is moving on the barometer. Cannot speak to if accurate or not. The needle to set with history from the gold knob on the front is operational.
The clock's two springs feel sound when keyed. The clock has a Ship's Bell routine every four hours. So strikes four double strikes at 12, 4, and 8, one double strike at 1, 5, and 9, and two double strikes at 2, 6, and 10. At the half hour the clock does the previous hour's double strike (none for 12:30, 4:30 and 8:30) and then a single strike. With the spring fully wound, the clock will run for 8 days.
The clock has a 7 jewel German made movement. The movement all appears to be made of metal or brass, before the company started going to plastic components in the latter 1960s. The movement was recently acquired, and the movement has not been serviced or cleaned.
