Our client's massive marble mantel clock, 32 by 32 by 9.25 inches, is crafted from carved white and Sienna marble stone, and features a pinecone finial, arched front with spiral turned columns and large corbels, and center with fine filigree carvings. It has a Brocot escapement with jeweled pallets, brass eight-day spring driven movement that's signed "Japy Freres" with stamped mark "M" and number 77882. Attributed to Samuel Marti et Cie of Paris. Samuel Marti established his firm in 1841 in Montbéliard, Doubs, a department in northeast France that was the birthplace of many prestigious clockmakers.
Marti exhibited his clocks regularly at expositions in Paris, where he won numerous medals from the 1840s throught 1900. In the 1860s he collaborated with Roux and Japy Freres, two celebrated French clockmakers.
