This is an antique E N Welch mantel clock made in the late 1800s and no later then 1902s as the company was bought by the Sessions family and the name of their clocks changed to Sessions in 1903. This makes this clock over 118 years old and for its age is in good shape. It runs fine. Comes with key and pendulum weight. Can not guarantee the case was not refinished. The dial and face are not original to the clock and does not have the E N Welch name printed on it. Comes with pendulum and key. Short history of the company: The E. N. Welch Manufacturing Company was a joint stock corporation formed 6 July 1864 to succeed an older private firm making clocks under the name of E. N. Welch. Elisha N. Welch (1809-1887) had been making clocks at a factory site on East Main Street at Forestville,Connecticut since taking over the bankrupt business of J. C. Brown about1856. After the death of Elisha Welch in 1887, the firm began to decline fast, selling off some of its assets and issuing new stock to raise capital. Members of the wealthy Sessions family were busy at this time buying out former stock holders and eventually took control of the firm in 1902 and changed the name to the Sessions Clock Company on 9 January 1903. All clocks sold after 1903 bear the Sessions name, which helps date this clock to before their take over.
