William Cummens (1768-1834) was one of the renowned Simon Willard apprentices who worked in Roxbury Massachusetts. Many of the regional period details of his work are closely related to the work of Simon Willard. In this example, the use of an English painted iron dial, the "Roxbury" high style case with quarter fan inlay, the step molded base and regional ogee bracket feet are features commonly found in Willard clocks. Also note the use of the Hickory wooden pendulum rod and the sand filled tin can weights. The works are complete including all of the motion work for the calendar. The painted iron dial is of English origin which is characteristic of the early clocks made by Willard and his apprentices. This is a clock that we have carefully gone through the movement and the clock runs and strikes perfectly. The clock stands just over 96" with the center finial in place and under eight feet tall with it removed.
