Antique French Clock and Garniture Set Slate and Marble Great Incising Designs Running & Striking Retailed by A Stowell of Boston
Item Description Here is a nice antique French clock and garniture set for your buying consideration. Beautiful antique clock set that we acquired in Maine.  Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself. You do not find such an elegant and exquisite example of this sort of clock case making very often.  Best clock and garniture set that we have acquired in the past 15 years to offer our clients. This fine Antique Clock and Garniture Set is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a high end auction house or clock shop.  We have been selling clocks out of our home for over 35 years.  We are therefore better positioned to control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the high end auction houses and clock shops experience . The clock and garnitures have just beautiful detailed incising on the front of the pieces. Appears to be a pink marble with the incising being painted silver and gold within the incising.  The gilt finish is still quite shiny and shows well,   Might be gold plating as well as the finish has stayed, but no way to be sure, so you be the judge before acquiring.  The clock was probably made in the 1870s to 1880s period. The clock and garnitures all match up.  The clock and garnitures have a brass section or skirt that runs around the front and sides of the base of the three pieces.  Quite unique and all still in place. The cases for the clock and the candle garnitures are all there.  Beautiful incising with gold paint on the front case of the clock and the front bases of the garnitures.  The cases/bases are made of marble and slate.  We see no cracks, splits, repairs, or missing pieces to report to you. There is some very minor chipping to the edges of the marble/slate components, see pics. Honestly do not see or feel any chipping, but has to be there somewhere!  The brass ring on the top of the left column on the front of the clock is missing. Beautiful black what appears to be porcelain face on this clock.  The roman numerals are incised into the face and then painted gold.  No cracks or hairlines to the face.  Beautiful gold colored painted on numbers.  A pink marble center piece in face.  The hands match and look appropriate to the clock.  The name of the jeweler whom sold the clock originally is also noted on the clock face in gold paint and says, "A Stowell & Co, Boston".  Stowell was a clock maker in the 1700s to mid-1800s, but do not think this is one of his creations. The bezel is firmly attached to the case that holds the beveled glass.  The glass is in good shape, not cracking or blistering.   Some minor surface scratching to the glass on the outside.  Beautiful gold trim ring around the clock face. Some remnants of pink/red felt on the bottom of the pieces. The garnitures have all their pieces and toppers.  Some candle wax residue at the top opening.  Do not see any cracks or repairs to any of the metal trim pieces.  Silver and gold incising on the front bowl of each garniture.  A beautiful added touch is the green and white marble on the bottom of the garniture bowls matches up with the columns on the front of the clock.  Just an immaculate example of the workmanship of a French clock set. French brass movement in this clock.  The brass movement was just cleaned and serviced by Clock Do.  The movement has no maker movement on it, which was typical for many French clock makers. the numbers '1228".   Think this is a later pendulum bob.  There is also the number "72" on the center bottom of the back plate below the logo.  The clock has a wire gong strike. Has an incised logo of LP and an oval ring on the gong tower top. Might be a clue as to the maker, may be there for something else. Strikes once on the half hour and the number of hours on the hour.  The metal rear door on the clock is in good condition and securely attached to the case.  Needs some adjustment to close and remain closed properly. Both wind springs feel sound when keyed.  The clock comes with a winding key. So, this clock is being sold in running and striking condition. The clock stands 14-3/8" tall, by 11-5/8" across, by 6.75" wide. The clock face is 4-3/8" across. Each of the garnitures stand 1-7/8" tall by 6-1/8" across, by 4-1/8" wide.  The clock and garnitures will be shipped to you in two separate boxes so that they can be packed more safely to your location.  The clock may be partially disassembled to more safely ship it to you.  Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. We are selling this clock in running and striking condition at this juncture,  no warranty intended.  There is no representation that the clock is in original condition, or will continue to be in working order.  The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well.  With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description. As can be expected when dealing with an antique clock, some adjustments may be needed after shipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be very delicate.  If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear.  One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art.  They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks.  Please ask any questions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it. Make sure that this clock meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it.   The item can be returned, there is a 15% restocking fee to do so.   So, please carefully review all the attached pictures, ask all the questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the item on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it. Don't be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions!
