Stunning clock featuring a beautifully sculptured Shakespeare sitting on a stool holding a quill pen...bronze finish. The sculpture also features a Hamlet and Macbeth script, a sword and a myrtle wreath...all beautifully detailed.
The clock housing is heavily ornate with flowers, leaf and scroll design, has a finial on top with a "climbing up" creature on each side, and each side of the housing features a hinged bell-shaped ornament.
Clock and sculpture are anchored on a metal base, decorated with bronze finish scroll work and beaded border.
Base is anchored on claw feet...one of the feet feels a little loose but is secure.
Metal base has some kind of a lacquer finish.
Very nice gong sound...low pitched, soothing, subtle . Clock was patented in July 1882.
Size:
15” tall, from bottom up to the finial of the clock.
17-1/2” wide, measured from foot to foot.
7-1/2” deep measured from foot to foot.
Weight: 23.77 lbs.
Condition:
Auctioneer stated that the clock worked for about 10min then stopped. He believes the clock has not been overwind and it probably just needs some oil. I am not an expert in clock repairs and sell the clock as non-working.
Base of clock shows wear to the lacquer finish like chips along the edges on top of base and a larger spot with missing lacquer on the right rear side...see last picture.
Face of clock shows wear consistent with age and use. It looks like some repair has been done to the minute hand... the soldered spot is in the circle part where the hand is connected to the clockwork...see picture...it is not very visible unless one takes a closer look; I moved the minute hand manually and it moves with ease, the hour hand moves along accordingly.
